Homer, Alaska, May 6, 2007Poised to make a meal of a moose, a female grizzly bear subdues her prey next to Gary Lyon's home in this still from a video shot by Lyon.

After a struggle that left "moose hair scattered up the driveway," Lyon told HomerNews.com, "the bear ripped the moose's chest open, ripped out its heart, took the heart out and ate it."

Once the bear, estimated at 400 to 500 pounds (181 to 226 kilograms), left the scene, a state trooper brought the carcass to a charity to use for food. The bear has since returned to the scene, presumably looking for her kill.

"This is a lean time for bears in the spring as they just emerge from their dens and don't have a whole lot of body reserves," Alaska biologist Travis McDonough told HomerNews.com. "They need to put on weight quickly and forage quite bit"particularly if they are feeding cubs, as McDonough suspects this bear was.
