An illustration shows a reconstruction of King Herod the Great's sarcophagus, based on shards found at what was apparently his tomb site.

"The journey to our conclusion began with the discovery of this sarcophagus," Hebrew University professor Ehud Netzer said on May 8, 2007, at a press conference announcing the find. "This was not a common sarcophagus of the sort that every Jewish citizen of that period could afford. We have seen them only in very unique tombs.

"The sarcophagus was our ticket inside."
