Mezokovesd, Hungary, April 6, 2007—Young women grin as they undergo an annual fertility ritual known as "the watering of the girls" in a town 80 miles (130 kilometers) northeast of Budapest.

The rite dates back to Hungary's pre-Christian past—perhaps as early as the second century A.D.—but the custom's pagan roots don't prevent it from being observed as part of traditional Easter celebrations.
