Nome, Alaska, March 13, 2007—Larry the dog might not ever become as famous as Triple Crown horse-race winners Secretariat or Seattle Slew. But to mushers, the pooch's achievement is every bit as exhilarating.

Larry helped owner Lance Mackey—seen here kissing the canine in triumph—become the first dogsled driver to win both the Iditarod and Yukon Quest races in the same year.

Mackey and his team crossed under the finish line's Burled Arch in Nome on Tuesday to claim the Iditarod title after the grueling 1,150-mile (1,850-kilometer) race across Alaskan wilderness. The team had won the 1,000-mile (1,600-kilometer) Yukon Quest on February 20.
