March 13, 2007—No matter how many autopsies she performs, Virginia medical examiner Kathy Hayden never completely gets used to it.
"Most people complain about the smell the most," Hayden said. "And when you put that together with the visual, it can be hard."
But she's willing to endure the unpleasantness, knowing she is providing answers that may help put victims' loved ones at ease.
