Zhongdong, China, February 12, 2007—Ethnic Miao children play basketball on their cave-sheltered school yard. Located deep in the southwestern Chinese province of Guizhou, the village of Zhongdong, which means "middle cave," is believed to be China's last cave-dwelling community.

About 20 families live in the aircraft hanger-size natural cave, carved inside a mountain over thousands of years by wind, water, and seismic shifts. The Chinese government has created alternate housing for the families and is urging them to move.
