One of the most important achievements of NASA's Mars Global Surveyor was finding strong evidence for the presence of large amounts of water on the red planet's surface.

The spacecraft snapped this picture, released November 2003, of a distributary fan resembling a dried-out river delta. The deposits were most likely left by streams or rivers of water as they flowed around valleys on Mars's surface, scientists say.
