36. Portobelo-San Lorenzo Forts, Panama

Built on the Caribbean coast by the Spanish monarchy to protect trading ships, the Portobelo-San Lorenzo fortifications are "magnificent examples of 17th- and 18th-century military architecture  ," according to the UN World Heritage group. Which makes it all the more disappointing that they are, in Traveler's words, "poorly tended, with little local pride or interest."
