July 14, 2006—Japan's most famous mountain is more than a sacred site and a tourist destination. It's also an active volcano that sits just 70 miles (112 kilometers) from the crowded streets of Tokyo (Japan map).

Watch as photographer Karen Kasmauski samples the cultural offerings meant to appease the goddess of Mount Fuji before making the arduous climb up the 12,388-foot (3,776-meter) volcano.
