Aleut Hunting Hat

Made with sea lion whiskers, ivory, and glass beads, this hat dates back to about 1850.

From the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, Aleut men honored the sea-mammal spirits with highly decorated hunting costumes—sea lion whiskers indicate the hunting prowess of the owner.
