Inuit Spirit Drummer

Carved from whalebone, this circa-1972 Inuit Eskimo spirit drummer comes from Nanavut, Canada.

Weathered whalebone is found along the central and eastern Arctic Coast. One prehistoric Eskimo culture oriented around whaling, the Thule, used whale bones for sculptures as well as roof spars for their half-buried sod houses.
