We travelers can help by withholding our cash from inappropriate businesses. I did my best back in Banff, shopping for jewelry for my wife—a stressful process, as my taste in jewelry is, er, undeveloped. I wandered the streets, seeking something Canadian Rockies-ish. So I passed up the Club Monaco boutique (Monaco?), skipped the shop selling Aussie hats (made in the U.S., yet), and entered the Canada House, which had a Year of the Great Bear poster in the window. Among the classy crafts, I found pendants made of regional stones by a western Canadian artist. I cast my vote for the Heritage Tourism Strategy by buying one. And what do you know? My wife loved it.
