He concedes some ground rules for safety on the approach: Be a nice traveler, keep a low profile, get as much information as you can, and do as the locals suggest. This view on potential travel dangers meshes well with the patented matter-of-factness of Viesturs' climbing style.

He explains what drives him to continue climbing: "It's pure and clean and basic. You're going up this big hill. It's simple. It's just you, step after step after step." If you take Ed Viesturs at his word, what keeps him going up there makes perfect sense.
