Matthew Henson holds a live musk-ox calf near Cape Bridgeman in northern Greenland on May 17, 1900. He wears animal fur clothing and a pair of goggles to protect his eyes from the glare. Henson, dressed in similar Arctic furs, had previously accompanied Peary together with howling dogs in lectures at the newly formed National Geographic Society to raise funds for their expeditions.
