Chow described the Foundation's mission as "to prepare our children to embrace a diverse world, succeed in a global economy and steward the planet's resources." She noted that over the years the Foundation has learned that early exposure leads to lifelong involvement, kids learn best by doing, and teachers cannot teach what they don't know.
Geography is now included in state-mandated exams in 22 states, up from 13 in 1989. Chow pledged that the Foundation will continue pushing to make geography part of the national, state and local school curricula and to get it tested. The Foundation will try innovative educational approaches, with a particular emphasis on getting out of the classroom to reinforce the relevance of geography in young people's daily lives.
Founded in 1988, the Education Foundation has issued 1,309 grants worth more than $48 million to assist states and institutions in their geographic education programs.
