October 29, 2009--A solitary "ruby"--really a red supergiant star--sits among a scattering of pale blue supergiants in a new picture of the Jewel Box star cluster taken at the European Southern Observatory in Chile.

The famous star cluster was given its name in the 1830s by English astronomer John Herschel, who thought the multicolored stars looked like exotic gems. Although the cluster is visible through a backyard telescope, ESO's new wide-field picture shows the Jewel Box against the numerous other stars that decorate its vast surroundings.
