Mount Hood's Illumination Rock--named for a failed attempt to artificially light it in the early 1900s--emerges from the mist in a May 2003 picture by U.S. adventure-sports photographer Richard Hallman.
Captured on a cloudy day in Oregon, the image is a testament to Hallman's eye--and patience. "I stayed at that spot for some time and watched as the clouds silently swirled around the peak" before snapping this photo, Hallman said in a statement.
"It was a magical moment, one of many I have had the good fortune of experiencing in the mountains."
