Chaiten, Chile, June 25, 2008--A homeowner leaves through a window of his volcanic-ash-caked home in flooded Chaiten, Chile.

A local volcano began erupting on May 2, and floods turned the deep ash to sludge weeks later.

The Chaiten volcano spewed hot ash, gas, and molten rock after being dormant for thousands of years. (See spectacular photos of the lightning-spiked eruption.)
