An overturned aircraft lies on a flooded airstrip after Hurricane Wilma hit Playa del Carmen in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo on October 22, 2005. The storm's ferocious winds battered Mexico's famed Caribbean beach resorts over the weekend, knocking over trees and signposts and trapping thousands of nervous tourists in cramped shelters.

Powerful waves swallowed up white-sand beaches in the popular resort town of Canczn, and howling winds tore across the island of Cozumel, a favorite getaway for scuba divers and cruise ship passengers.
