Trees display their autumn foliage against the winding rock formations of Escalante National Monument in Utah. Diane Cook and Len Jenshel shot the image while on assignment for National Geographic magazine in 1999.

"I love that color palette. It gives you the feeling of a warm autumn day," photography expert Gerd Ludwig said. Ludwig, a contributing photographer for National Geographic since the early 1990s, says he selected this and other images from the book Wide Angle for this gallery because they capture a scene via "a reduction in colors, a defined palette."
