For Donald Duck’s 82nd Birthday, More Ducks Without Pants

We remember Donald’s 1934 debut with these pictures of real ducks.

Donald Fauntleroy Duck entered the world on June 9, 1934, as a sailor suit-wearing cartoon character in The Wise Little Hen. Since then, he’s flown on the nose of military aircraft, hosted the Oscars, and been honored with his own asteroid.

To celebrate Donald’s birthday, we’ve collected some of our favorite images of ducks, the common name for the family of waterbirds that includes true ducks, geese, and swans. All of the images come from Photo Ark—photographer Joel Sartore's project to document the world's captive species. (Find out which Photo Ark animal is most like you.)

So far, Sartore has visited 40 countries and photographed more than 6,000 species in the studio portrait style that gives the collection its iconic look. Photo Ark aims to inspire people not only to care about the natural world, but also to help protect these animals for future generations.
