As Kermit the Frog observed, it’s not easy being green. That also goes for frogs that are blue, yellow, orange, and brown, which face threats from habitat loss, climate change, and deadly chytrid fungus infections.
Sunday is World Frog Day, and to celebrate, we’ve chosen twelve amazing pictures from Photo Ark—Nat Geo’s project with photographer Joel Sartore to document the world's 12,000 captive species. (Find out which of ten Photo Ark animals is most like you.)
Amphibians are among the groups hardest hit by today's many strikes against wildlife. As many as half of all species are under threat. Hundreds are sliding toward extinction, and dozens are already lost.
So far, Sartore's visited 40 countries and photographed more than 6,000 species with the studio lighting and black-and-white backgrounds that give the collection its iconic look.
Photo Ark aims to inspire people not just to care about the natural world, but also to help protect these animals for future generations.
