The successful 400-kilometer (249-mile) descent comes after 340 days in space—the longest-ever spaceflight for a U.S. astronaut.

After a white-knuckle descent onto the ice-speckled fields of Kazakhstan, U.S. astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonauts Mikhail Kornienko and Sergei Volkov have returned to Earth safely from the International Space Station—marking a successful end to Kelly and Kornienko’s Year in Space.
