San Francisco police are telling spectators and protesters that the Olympic torch relay route will be cut roughly in half. Authorities did not offer an immediate explanation for the change, but city officials had warned they might truncate the six-mile (about ten-kilometer) route at the last minute for security reasons. Thousands of people are gathered along San Francisco's waterfront to await the torch, which is scheduled to leave the city's baseball stadium shortly. Already Wednesday, there have been heated exchanges between supporters of China's role hosting the Olympic Games and opponents of the Beijing government's human rights record.
