The U.S. $15-million-dollar Saltire Prize, launched today, will reward the team that can find the best way to harness ocean power as a serious energy alternative to fossil fuels.

Marine renewable energy technologies are already underway, such as OpenHydro's tidal turbine (right) and SeaGen's tidal-energy converter (left).
