New microbial electrolysis cell technology (bottom) can turn organic material into hydrogen, a new study says.

The method, which does not rely on nonrenewable energy sources, could someday make hydrogen-powered transportation—such as the hydrogen-fueled car (top, in 2006)—a reality.
