Photo: Nobel in Medicine Awarded to Three for "Knockout" Mice

U.S. researchers Mario Capecchi (left) and Oliver Smithies (right) will split the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with British geneticist Sir Martin Evans (center).

The trio helped develop techniques for making "knockout" mice, which have one or more completely inactivated genes. The work allows scientists to improve their understanding of human genetic diseases.
