Photo: Honeybees Do "the Wave" to Fend Off Attackers



A hive of Southeast Asian giant honeybees (above) creates a shimmer effect, with each frame representing 200 milliseconds.

Like sports fans performing "the wave" at a stadium, the bees can create a dazzling ripple effect that repels predatory wasps and hornets, says research released in September 2008.
