Photo: Jobless Indian Youths to Sterilize Monkeys

A monkey accepts bread offered by a bus passenger on the Jammu-Srinagar highway in Nandani, about 18 miles (nearly 30 kilometers) from Jammu, India, on September 7, 2007.

A north Indian state on January 3, 2008, announced a plan to use unemployed youths to sterilize monkeys that may then be sent to camps in an effort to combat the aggressive primates.

The idea drew immediate condemnation from conservationists who said the plan was unscientific and would likely exacerbate the problem of aggressive monkeys that plague many regions of India.
