Photo: Venice "Ancestor" City Mapped for First Time



Aerial pictures of crop fields over the remains of Altinum (left) have allowed researchers to make the first detailed map of the buried Roman city (right).

The new map shows that the ancient city, thought to be the ancestor of nearby Venice, was a bustling port town well adapted to lagoon living, scientists said in July 2009.
