Photo: Odd Star Sheds Cometlike Tail

A new ultraviolet mosaic from NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer shows the speeding star Mira and its newly discovered cometlike wake—the first time such a phenomenon has ever been seen.

The tail contains large amounts of carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and other vital "seed" material needed to form new solar systems.
