Photo: South Louisiana Is Sliding Into the Sea, Study Says



Satellite imagery shows the "toe" of Louisiana along the state's southern coast. The waters around the region are clouded by sediments and organic matter flowing into the Gulf of Mexico from the Mississippi River.

New research shows that—because the southern part of Louisiana was formed by built-up sediments—the region is not only sinking but also gradually sliding into the Gulf.
