Photo: Extinction Crisis Worsens; "Dow Jones" Approach Touted

The Père David's deer (such as this one shown in an undated photo) is among the 44,838 species on the 2008 International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)s Red List of Threatened Species.

Thirty-eight percent of those species are close to extinction, with one in four mammals on the verge of being lost forever.
