Photo: Dark Skies Initiatives Aim to Boost Stargazing

Time-lapse photography shows stars streaking over the desert landscape along a highway in Arizona. The distant glow on the horizon is from the city lights of Phoenix, 100 miles (161 kilometers) away.

As light pollution worsens across the United States, astronomers are urging citizens adopt dark-skies policies that would limit the amount of light shining upward.
