Fossilized leaves (fronds) of tree ferns (above) indicate an ancient rain forest once stood in what is now Illinois. The fossil record of prehistoric forest in North America indicates these tropical ecosystems experienced rapid transitions as climate changed, scientists announced in September 2008.
