Photo: Global Positioning Tech Inspires Do-It-Yourself Mapping Project



Traveling by foot, bike, and car, a group of volunteers used global positioning system (GPS) devices to create this colorful street map of the British city of Bath (seen inset).

High licensing fees, corporate use of false data, and the advent of GPS technology have combined to inspire a movement in the United Kingdom for people to create digital street maps that anyone with an Internet connection can edit, customize, and share.
