Photo: Dodo Skeleton Found on Island, May Yield Extinct Bird's DNA



A scientist holds bones from a complete dodo skeleton, discovered last month on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean.

Very little is known about the extinct bird, including what exactly it looked like. This painting of the bird (inset) was done in 1792—more than a century after the species disappeared.
