Photo: Young Mars Was Wet, Mineral Map Shows



An image of Mars shows a dark feature known as Syrtis Major (inset). The map shows the presence of water-bearing clay minerals identified by an instrument called OMEGA that has been peering at the red planet from space.

Blue indicates small amounts of minerals, and orange-red indicates large amounts.
