Satellite imagery shows Hurricane Fred brewing in the Atlantic at 1:45 p.m. ET on September 9, 2009 (click here for an updated image).

A few hours earlier the tempest had become a strong Category 3 hurricane, making it the second major storm of the 2009 Atlantic season.
