Photo: Mountain Glaciers Melting Faster Than Ever, Expert Says

Climate expert Lonnie Thompson found an image from the 1930s (top) showing the extent of several glaciers in the Andes mountain range in Peru. He then took a more recent image from the same vantage point (bottom) to illustrate how much the glaciers have retreated.

Around the world mountain glaciers are melting faster than ever, Thompson announced at a recent scientific conference. The rapid thaw offers some of the most provocative evidence yet that global warming isn't due to natural forces alone.
