Photo: Arctic Oil Rush Sparks Battles Over Seafloor

Seen in a still from a video, the Russian research vessel Akademik Fyodorov, with miniature submarines on board, sails the Arctic Ocean on August 2, 2007. Its mission included placing a Russian flag on the North Pole seafloor.

The maneuver was intended to stake a claim to natural resources under the seabed and has sparked a rush among a number of countries to do the same.
