U.S. journalist Paul Salopek smiles after his release from custody on September 9, 2006, at the courthouse in El Fasher in Sudan's North Darfur state.

Salopek was on a freelance assignment for National Geographic magazine when Sudanese pro-government forces captured him and two assistants on August 6. He was held for 34 days and charged with spying and other offenses.
