The Large Hadron Collider, which malfunctioned nine days after it launched in September 2008, is predicted to be up and running again in June 2009.

The 17-mile (27-kilometer) long particle collider is designed to probe the mysteries of the big bang and illuminate puzzling phenomena like dark matter.

The collider project is just one of many exciting science initiatives on tap for 2009.
