Photo: First Solar Atlantic Crossing Attempt Is Underway

The crew of the solar-powered sun21 catamaran set off on October 16 from Basel, Switzerland, to attempt the first solar-powered crossing of the Atlantic Ocean.

Its roof covered with photovoltaic cells, the 46-foot-long (14-meter-long) boat sleeps six and can motor 24 hours a day, thanks to batteries that can run for 20 hours on a full charge, according to expedition organizers.
