Pet dogs wait to be evacuated from New Orleans on August 30, 2008, as Hurricane Gustav heads toward the U.S. Gulf Coast.

In sharp contrast to the preparation for Hurricane Katrina in 2005, animal-welfare groups got thousands of pets and their owners safely away from the U.S. Gulf Coast before Gustav hit.
