Photo: Wildfires May Briefly Slow Arctic Warming, Study Says

Forest fires rage across the width of Alaska in an image taken by NASA's Terra satellite on August 14, 2005.

Wildfires may give the rapidly warming Arctic a brief reprieve. Tiny particles in smoke from the fires cool the surface for weeks or months at a time, says a study released in July 2008.
