Photo: 2006 Was Warmest Year Yet Recorded for U.S.

Emergency workers battle a wildfire near Moorpark, California, on December 3, 2006.

According to a new government report, an unusually warm December made 2006 the warmest year on record for the U.S. The high temperatures, which the report says were caused in large part by human-produced greenhouse gases, contributed to a record wildfire season and caused drought and heat waves in many areas of the country.
