Photo: Brain's "Core" Revealed by First Hi-Res Wiring Map

The first high-resolution map of wiring in the cerebral cortex reveals a dense and highly interconnected structural core that seems to play a vital role in communication within and between the brain's two hemispheres, new research says.

The work is an early step in connectomics, an emerging field of science that seeks to create detailed computer models of the brain's wiring similar to the whole genome maps created by DNA researchers.
