Photo: Ancient Star Is Nearly as Old as Universe



The star HE 1523-0901 was born shortly after the big bang, thought to have taken place some 13.7 billion years ago (see graphic above). The radioactive elements in the star decayed over time, allowing astronomers to measure its age.
