Photo: Large Hadron Collider Shut Down Until Spring 2009

A welder makes the first connection between two cryomagnets inside the Large Hadron Collider, the world's largest particle accelerator.

Despite a successful test sending beams of particles around the collider's huge underground tunnels, a later electrical test caused a glitch on September 19, 2008, that will shut down the machine until early spring 2009.
